Australian Footy Clubs in Germany
Good news for Australians planning to live in Germany. At least for those who don't think they will be able to survive without their beloved footy.
No need to find a little corner in a park to kick on your own. All over the country Australian Football Clubs have established themselves with names like Rheinland Lions (based in Koeln), Frankfurt Redbacks, Berlin Crocodiles or Munich Roos. And they are organised, in the Australian Football League, short AFLG.
The Rheinland Lions are dominating the top of the ladder followed by the Munich Roos. The Lions won the trophy for the last 3 years. All clubs participate also in international games. But you don't have to be a professional to participate. The clubs welcome newcomers.
Fron the Rheinland Lions website:
New to Cologne? Interested in trying something new? Or are you just an Aussie a long way from home desperate for a kick of the footy? Whoever you are, wherever you come from, whatever sport you’ve played in the past, we’d love to welcome you to the Rheinland Lions – Germany’s most successful Australian Rules Football Club! You can find us every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 - 8:30 pm in the Stadtgarten, Cologne directly under ColoniusTower AND every Saturday at 1:00 PM (unless it’s a game day).
The AFLG website provides contacts in other German cities for footy enthusiasts. Football in deiner Naehe (Football in your neighborhood) lists smaller German places like Kiel, Trier, Freiburg or Leipzig.
The club's players are a mix of Australians and Germans.   A good way to find new friends and practice the German language.
