Hildegard Knef (1925-2002) or "Die Knef", as she was known, was a German singer, actor, songwriter, stage actor and writer. She was Germany’s post war diva, leading a life of successes and sufferings, a life she called her “roller coaster.”
Her husky voice was her trade mark. She was intelligent, independent and cool, and yet, vulnerable, mysterious, and never afraid to speak her mind.
Having played small roles in film and theater productions during the war time, Hildegard Knef emerged after the war as a symbol of war-shattered Germany and became “Berlin’s voice”. A life of survival, of stubbornly bouncing back and of starting anew, without ever losing sight of the past.
April Albert’s production “Die Knef” will play at the Butterfly Club in South Melbourne from December 1 till December 4.
