Sommer in Stuttgart
The four seasons, in German language, die vier Jahreszeiten (times of the year) are Fruehling (spring), Sommer, Herbst (autumn) und Winter.
This year's Summer will commence on 21 June at 13:28 MESZ (Middle European Summer Time = Mitteleuropaeische Sommerzeit) in the Northern Hemisphere. That is the astronomical start, when the Earth's North Pole axis is tilted most directly toward the sun, also called Summer solstice or June solstice. On the day of the solstice the sun appears to stand still because it has climbed as for North as it can get. The word "solstice" means standstill of the sun. It comes from the Latin "sol" and "sistere" ( Sun stand still).
The opposite happens on the southern half of the globe. The Earth's South Pole axis is tilted most directly away from the sun, which marks the first day of winter in the Southern Hemisphere.
We also have the meteorological start of summer, beginning on the 1 of June. The meteorological seasons are based on temperatures. The warmest month of the year in the northern hemisphere are June, July and August.
In Germany it's easy to forget the fact that it's the start of summer at the moment. Temperatures around 15°C remind more of spring then summer. For the actual forecast visit Wetter Deutschland.
