The first ever European Song Contest was staged and broadcasted in 1956. 14 countries participated on this historic 24th of May 1956 with Lys Assia from Switzerland winning the contest. Lys Assia is the only Swiss contestant to have ever won the Eurovision Song Contest.
The rules for this contest, formerly known as the "Eurovision de la Chanson" have been changed a lot over the years. In the early days songs had to be performed in the countries native language and until the early 1970s only solo artists were allowed to enter the contest. Bands were banned.
Abba was the most successful contestant ever. After winning in 1974 they shot to worldwide fame in no time.Today this remarkable mega event is the most successful TV show in Europe. But no one needs to miss out on the event in Aus.
SBS will cover the entire contest over 3 days! On May 28, 29 and 30 Australian viewers can watch the semi finals and the final. Don't forget, Lena will represent Germany this year. For more details on the program visit: Eurovision on SBS.
