And the winner is: Das Heidelberger Schloss (Heidelberg Castle)
The German National Tourist Board (abbreviation: GNTB) asked actual and potential tourists from all over the world for their favourite German travel destination. Heidelberg and its famous castle ruin which dates back to the 13th century and still dominates the cities skyline, won most votes.
The castle has  not just been a popular place for tourists in the past and present. Painters, writers and poets mused upon the ivy-wrapped decay of once grand buildings. From Hugo to Twain, from Turner to Fohr, many artists romanticized the old ruins. For more info: schloss-heidelberg.de
