What it would be like to see everything but not participate in it? In Wim Wenders movie "Himmel ueber Berlin" (filmed in1987) we follow 2 angels, Damiel and Cassiel through the divided city of Berlin. They watch over the city, but can themselves only be seen by children. They listen to the thoughts of people, collect their stories without interacting or any feelings. Until one day a beautiful trapeze artist entices one of them down from heaven.Beautifully shot in black and white when we see the city through the angels eyes and shot in colour when they meet the inhabitants of the city.Much has changed in Berlin since this movie was made and to see it today gives us a good idea of Berlin what it was like many decades ago before the wall came down. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds play in the rundown Hotel Esplanade at the Potsdamer Platz, unrecognisable today with it's glittering shopping complex Sony Centre. SBS 2 will show this amazing movie on Monday, 11 June at 10.30pm.
