When travelling to Germany's well known city of Nuernberg it's worth doing a little detour  to some lesser known places in Frankonia. One place definitely worth visiting is the mediaval town of Lauf. It's a real little charmer.
Thank's to the rapids of the river Pegnitz the area saw the construction of lots of watermills more than a thousand years ago.  A few of them can still be seen in working order. Settlement started in the 11th century and not much later the first castle was erected. The Wenzel castle (Wenzelschloss) as we can see it today was build in the 14th century. Today it's used as part of  Nuernbergs Art Academy (one of Germany's oldest, founded in 1662).
Around 26 ooo people live in Lauf today. In the 1970's  a number  of smaller settlements were incorporated into Lauf. The historic market square is a real gem with it's old Fachwerk architecture. The last weekend in June sees the annual Altstadtfest (old town party).
There is no shortage in eateries for every budget and if you'd like to go to the theatre you are up for a real treat. The Dehnberger Hoftheater is an old rural estate 2 km north of town which has been converted into an artlovers paradise. For a current program visit http://www.dehnberger-hoftheater.de .
Outdoor enthusiasts can find unspoilt forests and river walks. Mountainbiking is also very popular. Don't miss the romantic Bitterbachschlucht.
