Recreating the atmosphere of 40 years of East German history is the goal of Berlin's DDR Museum.
Situated in the heart of Berlin, just opposite the historic Berliner Dom (cathedral) in the former east part of the city visitors can enjoy a hands- on experience of East German life. The museum opened in 2006 and it's goal is to maintain a balance between the political and the everyday.
The creators and curators put big emphasis on interactive experience and would like their visitors to rethink clichés and expand their knowledge in taking us on an extraordinary and interesting journey into the socialist past of the former East Germany.
With the help of a simulated Trabant journey through a high-rise residential estate with genuine Trabant driving noises, displays on East German rock bands and ordinary consumer products visitors can enjoy history in a playful, and entertaining way.
This museum is quiet unique in Germany since it is 100% privately funded and maintained. The exhibitions expand constantly and a recently added restaurant promises genuine East German cuisine.
Where: Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 1, right on the river Spree, directly opposite the Berlin Cathedral
The museum opens daily, also on public holidays.
