Are you planning to travel to Hamburg next time you'll visit Germany? Instead of using public transport, expensive taxis or getting frustrated in the attempt to find a car park for your hired car, try to get around the city by bike.
The project Stadt-Rad Hamburg started more then a year ago and proved to be very successful with tourists and locals alike. More then 53000 registered users booked over half a million rides and the huge success prompted the city to invest in the expansion of hiring stations. Before using the bikes customers need to register either at the rental terminal itself, on the phone or online. The website Stadt-Rad is available in German and English language. The first 30 minutes on the bike are free of charge, the maximum charge for 24 hours is 12 Euro.
Other cities in Germany offer similar opportunities. Check out the local tourist offices/ websites to find more information.
In case you would like to book a bicycle tour through Hamburg and surroundings check out Die Landpartie. This company offers packaged bike tours including accommodation and meals. They offer a 3 day group trip on bicycles through the city and the countryside totaling 103 km.
